Are you old enough to remember the Atari game Pitfall? Basically, you were in the jungle running and leaping over bottomless pits and other obstacles trying to reach a treasure. You could only advance if you learned what NOT to do. Yet no matter how many times I reached the same screen, I would still fall into the pit.
Pitfalls in our habits work the same way. Over and over I encounter the same lament “I must get organized! Who can help me get organized?”
Here’s the truth: Whether or not you have hired a consultant to help or are tackling the mess alone, you must avoid the pitfalls afterward. Compare this to a weight loss diet where the doctor advises to lose some kilos, but you can’t avoid the supermarket junk food isle. You need to make some changes in your habits or you find yourself back to square one with a reoccurring mess on your hands.
So here are my Pearls of Wisdom to avoid the pitfalls:
- Stay off the internet. Cyber Monday specials and other deals can be found year-round. DO NOT justify to me about the wonderful deals you can get on a post Turkey Day shopping spree. Did you seriously wait 365 since last year for a bargain?
- Avoid the mall, secondhand stores, Dollar stores, or sales where you are tempted to buy things.
- Shop with cash.
- Incorporate the principle of “one thing in, one thing out”.
- Put things back right away and train family members to do the same.
So there you have the truth. If you want to get organized, plan on making some habit changes. Avoid your pitfalls. Follow the Koach’s advise. Only then can you enjoy the de-cluttered and organized home you have been dreaming of.
