The Winter Coat Dilemma

What do I love about winter?  I love the woolly sweaters, tall leather boots, hot cocoa, and cocooning under a pile of blankets. What don’t I love?  I don’t love the pile of coats making my four room apartment look extremely cluttered.  We are a family of eight, but not an eight-coat family.  We have heavy winter coats, mid weight coats, Shabbos coats, raincoats.  By the way, I live in a country where there aren’t built in closets.

I utilize a coat rack and over the door hooks.

Coat tree used by my husband and myself.
Over the door hooks hung from the top rail of a bunk bed, utilized by 3 boys.
Back of a bedroom door with both a over the door hooks and a hanging shoe bag.

Not pictured is a third bedroom that has two over the door coat racks like the one pictured above, hung side by side.

Last year I created a “closet” using stacking plastic shelves and a broom stick .

My “closet” with hanging space for coats, drawers for winter accessories, and shelves for sporting gear or school items.

Currently, this space previously used for this “closet” is where the baby’s crib is.  Next year I can re-purpose the space once the crib is not longer in use.

Other popular solutions to the coat dilemma are wall hooks or free standing wardrobe closets.   Regardless of which solution you choose, stick with your system and train your family to use it.  With less time spent hanging up coats, the more time spent enjoying that cup of cocoa.

Thanks for reading.  Stay warm.

Hi. I’m Karen Furman, a home organizer and decluttering professional. Organizing is something I’ve been doing since 1st grade when used to straighten everyone’s desks. Fast forward a few decades later, I turned my passion for organizing into a business. Philosophy = Your home should be organized so you know where things are, to the degree that you feel relaxed and not stressed in your space. Method = A combination of Marie Kondo + FlyLady + my own style. YOU make the decisions. YOU decide what to keep and not to keep. I help provide clarity. Attitude = Positive, enthusiastic, non-judgmental
