In my family, grocery shopping is done once a week. On Thursday we do the Shabbos shopping plus purchase any other food for the upcoming week.
The majority of the weekly cooking is done on Friday. Then we cruise on leftovers for the rest of the week, supplementing new dishes as needed. Today is Wednesday and most leftovers have been eaten and the fridge needs restocking. This means it’s The Koach’s Kreative Kitchen Wednesday because I try to use up any remaining produce in combination with what is in the pantry.
So what did I make tonight?
- Smoothie: leftover bagged salad (lettuce, shredded carrot, shredded cabbage) and pomegranate juice
- Orange soup: Carrots, sweet potato, onion. Pureed with immersion blender
- Spiced baked carrot sticks
- Baked apple slices
- Popcorn (made in a pot on the stove)
The kids really wanted cheese sandwiches, but we were out of cheese. We purchase a certain amount for the week and if they eat it all at the start of the week, there is no more until shopping day. It would be so easy to run to the store to buy more, but the lesson is two-fold. First, they need to eat things in moderation. Second, they need to make due with what they have.
Shopping day is tomorrow, so depending which time the shopping gets done, it may or may not be another creative kitchen day.
Are you Kraving any of my recipes? Feel free to contact me. If there’s enough interest, maybe I’ll post them here on the blog.
I’m off to enjoy some of fruits (and vegetables) of my labor.
