My family’s annual back to school shopping outing was a tradition I eagerly anticipated. Getting new shoes and clothing was special but even more so was the thrill of selecting school supplies. A brand new box of Crayola crayons is a memory I shall never forget. My mother must have had the patience of a saint to put up with my indecisiveness when choosing the “right” color notebook/folder/binder. What if I chose the “wrong” one? In any event, at day’s end, I was armed with all the supplies needed for school success.
Now that I’m a parent with many school-aged children to shop for, I cannot say I approach back to school shopping with the same zeal. It’s time consuming as well as expensive. Today is only the 1st of August and I have no intention of heading to the store until the end of the month. My mental calendar reminds me it’s “summer vacation” not “back to school”.
The shopping list includes school supplies, uniforms, and books. Even when the shopping is finished this is only the first step. First step? What’s the second?
LABEL LABEL LABEL
Protect your investment. LABEL EVERYTHING. As both a parent and former classroom teacher I cannot stress how important it is to label every single item from pencil to notebook to shoe to jacket. You cannot imagine the mountain of items in lost and found unless you have seen it yourself. Irregardless the reason be it irresponsibility, forgetfulness or other, kids are generally unobservant when something goes missing. A non-labeled item has a greater chance of remaining MIA than a labeled one.
Along my parenting journey I have discovered some companies that make this labeling task easier.
- Mabel’s Labels. They have some really cool products. There are stickers to label clothing, shoes, and supplies. Mabel’s Labels also has labels for the kitchen and pantry, allergy alert labels, and combo packs. I will swear by these labels. The do not peel off, smudge, or fall off. I’ve had some items for over six years and the label is still stuck on firm. Imagine never having to write a name on a sippy cup again.
2. Lovable Labels. http://www.lovablelabels.ca/us/
3. Label Land https://label-land.com/
4. There is one more amazing company out there called Cubby Stuff. If you register your school they will SHOP for AND LABEL all the supplies. There are only a few days left to register your school. It is free to register, there is no minimum purchase order, and the school receives 5% of the profits. https://cubbystuff.com/
Though you may be in summer vacation mode like me, I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to check out the websites above and order some labels. So when you are ready to LABEL LABEL LABEL it’s a matter of peel and stick. It will save you time and money in the long run.
Thanks for reading.
