Organized Chaos

“Is your home very organized?” is a question I often get asked.  The short is answer is “Yes, basically.”  Let me break the question down into different components of what people are really asking me:

  • Q: Is your home cluttered?   A:  No.

If I keep clothing that doesn’t get worn, books that go unread, or anything else that doesn’t get used, the space will feel cramped and cluttered. I am constantly weeding out and giving away. We are a family of eight in a three bedroom one floor apartment. I can only keep what we use and things we love.

  • Q:  Is your home organized?   A: Yes.

Everything has a place.  I MUST know where things are when I need them or when someone asks “Where’s the…?”  It cuts down on stress and frustration to be able to locate where things are.

  • Q:  Is your home picture-perfect?   A: Yes, but for only the duration of five minutes, long enough to take a photo to prove it had been straightened.

I would like it to look  nice when my husband comes home from work or when guests arrive, but it doesn’t last. We have accepted the “lived-in casual look”.

I hope this answers what inquiring minds wanted to know.  Even a home organizer has their own home organizing challenges because a home is always evolving and one must adapt to the changing needs of the family. The key is to seek solutions in order to keep the household running smoothly.
