Yesterday my office had an in-office lunch meeting. We got to choose our meal from the restaurant’s on-line menu. The number of options was overwhelming and everything sounded delicious making it difficult to chose what to order. Making my lunch selection doubly difficult was we decided to order from a dairy restaurant. (Kosher restaurants have either dairy-based meals or meat-based meals with both types of restaurants offering pareve dishes (pareve means neither dairy nor meat, such as vegetables, grain, fish, or eggs).
My mouth was watering over all the cheesy dishes I would have loved to order, but my brain said ‘no’ because it knows my body feels so much better when I avoid dairy. This lunch selection was becoming an agonizing process until I discovered the restaurant had a vegan menu. I was hesitant in ordering something because I wanted something filling but not “boring”, however as I perused more carefully, I saw they had vegan pizza and decided to order it. The pizza arrived in a pizza box (for some reason I wasn’t anticipating this because I hadn’t ordered a “real” pizza) and OMG-was it delicious! It looked like real (cheesy) pizza and had the same taste and texture as real pizza. Not only were my taste buds happy, I was very proud of myself for not giving into the temptation of ordering dairy.
Moral of the story: Always look for solutions, stand behind your beliefs, and if there is a will, there’s a way.
