Purim Checklist 2020

Soon it will be Purim with much to do to prepare. If you haven’t already discovered the SANITY-SAVING BENEFITS of using a CHECKLIST, here’s the perfect opportunity to try one out. Why is this checklist different from all other checklists? Because this list addresses the ORGANIZATION ASPECTS of Purim and being organized will INCREASE JOY and REDUCE STRESS. Isn’t that what we want in a holiday (plus some chocolate with zero calories…)?


  • MAKE SPACE. Purge your refrigerator.  Get rid of any forgotten leftovers or expired items. If you encounter any science experiments growing in the back of the fridge, be happy to have discovered them before Pesach cleaning.
  • DESIGNATE. Choose a shelf in the refrigerator for perishables and drinks that will be used for Purim only and keep them separate from the things you normally store in there.
  • CREATE A SHOPPING LIST. Use a shopping list and shop ASAP.  Some of you may choose to shop before Shabbos for everything you need but in the event you didn’t, write down what you need to purchase for the seuda, drinks, mishloach manot, and disposable items, etc. I also like to include HEALTHY NOSH to counteract all the non healthy nosh that will be ingested. NOTE: The grocery store will be packed with shoppers.  Keep in mind that a chik-chak shopping trip most likely won’t happen.
  • MAKE STATIONS. Decide on a specific location for costumes, mishloach manot items to assemble, and place for borrowed items. Designate a basket or container to hold costumes.  I use a large plastic storage container.  Kids will be dressing up multiple times during the week for carnivals or school parties.  By putting all costumes in one place, you will know where to find them for the next wearing. Select a place for borrowed items.  If you have borrowed a costume or other item, put them in a special place so they won’t get mixed in with your own belongings.
  • MAP IT OUT. Plan a delivery route for Purim day.  Whether walking, driving, or using public transportation, make a plan of attack for delivering your mishloach manot.
  • GATHER. If you don’t already have a ‘Purim Box’ create one now.  I have see-though boxes for all the holiday.  In our Purim box we have noisemakers and Megilas. Put them in a container so they will be ready and waiting for Wednesday night Megilla reading.  After Purim add extra bags, stickers, etc. for future use.
  • CHECK TIMES. Check times for Megila reading.  Post them on your fridge, message center, send yourself a Google Calendar reminder, send a family WhatsApp, etc.
  • GET CASH. Have cash on-hand.  Go to the ATM or make a withdrawal from the bank so you have money for matonos levyonim and tzedakah collectors.
  • USE DISPOSABLES. Have disposable plastic or paper goods on-hand for meals.  I do my share in saving the environment, but this week I am going to use throw-away items as much as possible because there is so much to be done without spending all day washing.  The counters will be cluttered up already without adding stacks of dirty dishes. (Or maybe I can bribe my kids into doing more dishes…)
  • PRE-FAST FOOD DECISIONS. Decide what the non-fasting members of the family will eat during the Fast of Esther.  Make it simple. There’s nothing worse than fasting and having to constantly be going into the kitchen because someone wants to eat.  I like to make a ‘nosh and nibble help yourself platter.’
  • MAKE MORE STATIONS. Clear off a counter, table, or set up a card table.  Decide where misloach manot packages that have been delivered to you will be put on Purim Day.
  • PREPARE SUPPLIES. Gather supplies for misloach manot.  Some people like to have everything prepared before Purim.  My family tradition is to make an assembly line of items to package after Megilah reading.  Do this step earlier in the week if that be your preference.
  • LABEL. Label a large box, basket, or gift bag with everyone’s name.  The purpose of this is to have a place to put MMs that get delivered.  There is nothing worse than family members having misplaced goodies or squabble over whose is whose.
  • PUT OUT PAPER AND PENS. Set out a pad of paper and pens.  If things tend to show up when you are out and about, if someone is home, they can write down who came by and what it was. In theory, they should put the goodies in the designated places.


  • MORNING FOOD OPTIONS. Put out healthy nosh.  Cut some apple slices, dried fruit, hard-boiled eggs, peanut butter and jelly mini sandwiches (or whatever else your family likes).  The purpose is to have  ‘grab ‘n go’ options beside candy and junk food.  Do this at the same time breakfast is being prepared
  • ACCESSIBLE CLEANING TOOLS. Have a trash can and broom easily accessible.  Prepare for chaos and mess throughout the day, but having these tools on hand will make cleanup  easier if you can do a little here and a little there.
  • POST THE SCHEDULE. Have tentative schedule posted or notes on your electronic device.  What time is Megila reading?  What time does the seuda start? What time are teachers having students stop by? etc.
